Now that I have some down time, I figure I'll try to knock some blog posts out.
This one seems WAY late considering now we've already moved to Temple and been in our house for 3 weeks! My last post that was actually in order was my CrossFit Open 14.1 post.
That same weekend, on Sunday, March 2nd, we made a trip to Temple to look at houses. When we were in Temple for interviews at the end of 2013, they had put me in touch with a realtor that showed me the area while Colt was interviewing. Since we had decided we were going to be ranking Temple #1 for Colt's residency match and we felt pretty confident with the odds of him matching there, we decided to go ahead and look at houses prior to match day so that we weren't rushed afterwards trying to find a house. We assumed it would take two or three trips for us to find something, and due to tax season, we knew we wouldn't have a lot of free weekends available. The realtor had told us that if we happened to find one, we could make an offer on it contingent upon match. Prior to our trip to Temple, I had been sending the realtor homes that I had seen and was interested in. She was also sending me homes based on our preferences. She works a lot with incoming and outgoing residents so she had a pretty good idea of what houses were recently listed or about to be listed by outgoing residents. Prior to our trip, we were thinking that we wanted to live in an older, more established neighborhood with mature trees and a nice back yard. We were expecting to find a little less house and having to invest some money into a few updates to get the house the way we wanted it.
We headed to Temple on Sunday morning and got there a little before lunch. The realtor that we had been working with had a family emergency so her partner ended up showing us around. We looked at new homes and neighborhoods with the possibility of finishing a home that had just started being built. We didn't really love anything and we still thought we wanted to be in a more established neighborhood since we've experienced the new home and neighborhood route. Then we went through the list that we had put together of existing homes. We looked at several houses and actually found a couple that we really liked and were deciding between. The one we ended up liking most was built in 2006 and an existing resident lived in it. It had a large backyard and a good floor plan. There was just a couple things about the home, we weren't 100% sold on. I do think we would have made an offer on it though. The other home was a recent build in a new neighborhood. It was a cute home but the layout of the home we decided wouldn't really worked for us. We kept looking at homes and right before we were about to wrap up, the realtor mentioned one additional home that he had just met with the seller about the night before that he didn't even have an MLS listing up for yet! He was going to prepare the MLS and put it officially on the market the next day. He said we could look at it if we were interested. We looked at it, and we loved it! It was built in 1996. The family that had lived in it the past three years had done a lot of updates on it. There had installed new floors, recently painted walls and cabinets, remodeled the bathroom, installed granite, backsplash and new appliances in the kitchen, and thay had added on an extended backporch when they put a new roof on. They had basically already done all of the updates we were planning on having to do. Plus, there was a large live oak in the front yard, two bradford pears in the backyard (one has since died and that was a bummer), and about three crepe myrtles. An existing resident was selling the house so the timing was perfect as well. We ended up going back to the realtors office to draw up some paperwork and make an offer!
The weather had started to get bad as we were finishing our househunt. It started with just rain but quickly turned into sleet. I actually slipped while walking into one of the houses and busted it. Colt tweaked his hand trying to catch me and prevent me from falling! We had left the house very unprepared because it was fairly warm when we left that morning. Luckily, I had thrown a jacket in the car but Colt had nothing!
On our way home that night, the realtor called saying the seller had countered our offer. We agreed to it and therefore, we had quickly decided and had a contract on our new house! The option period started and Colt had to go back next week for the inspection! In the meantime, I looked up the seller's name and she was acutally a current resident in Emergency Medicine and Colt knew her. Evidently she made a call to see how likely it was that Colt would match in Temple!
We left Temple around 5 on Sunday. It started sleeting very bad on the way home... and of course we had went in my car instead of Colt's truck. Tires were spinning on trucks next to us, and we saw so many wrecks. It took us almost 4 hours to make it 80 miles to Hillsboro. When we finally made it to Hillsboro, we decided to pull off and take a break at McDonald's. We barely made it up the driveway to the parking lot. We tried going up and rolled right back down! We split chicken nuggets and as we were eating, we realized we weren't going to make it home and that we better starttrying to find a place to stay. Everywhere we called was full of course! Josh ending up finding us a room at American Value Inn online for us. We got one of their last rooms! It definitely wasn't the nicest room either! We turned on the heat and stuff flew out of the heater! The next morning when we got up, everything was still frozen. I called into work. We ended up leaving our room around 9:45. Since the roads were still questionable, we went over to the Outlets and killed some time until the roads melted. We went to Reebok, Under Armour and Nike. Colt quickly changed clothes so he wasn't wearing his same clothes from the day before. Then we came home to a freezing house! Luckily we lived in the same town as his parents and were able to call them to get our dogs since we were making an unexpected overnight trip!
These were the roads on the beginning of our trip home that day. They got even worse.
And this was our room in Hillsboro
Here's some pics of the house that I took the day we were househunting.
Yesterday, I took some pics of the house with all OUR stuff in it, and I will post them too! Since I'm posting this so late, it's crazy now how much different our stuff looks in the house!
The backporch
The kitchen
I didn't think I would ever really like white cabinets, but I really like the way they look in this house!
The living room
We were thinking we didn't want wood floors due to our dogs, but the seller had a dog bigger than ours and they looked to be in pretty good shape.
The office
There is a built in bookself as well that covers the entire side wall. We were a little worried about our current office furniture fitting in this room. Luckily it all fits, but we did have to take it apart in order to get it in the room. It's definitely more full than in the picture below!
The master bathroom
When Colt went down for the inspection, he videoed the whole house and yard for me because he knew I would want it. We ended up using it too to plan for furniture and decorations.
