Board Certified

In June 2018, hubby found out he was officially board certified and that he'd passed both his oral and written boards! 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, 3 years of residency and 1 year of work... along with several moves and two kids later!

Trip to Temple - September 2017

The last routine post that I did was from last August! This post is from September... 9 months ago. I was still fairlyearly on in my pregnancy with Cutler.  

Kinley and I made a trip back to Temple to visit on September 10th and 11th. We drove down on a Sunday and stayed in a hotel. We got to go play at our old park, Lion's Park, that was right next to our old house. I might've driven by our old house too just to check it out! Monday morning, we headed to workout at CrossFit Sprag. Then along with all of our kids, Heather, Megan, Lacie and I grabbed Chick-fil-a and went to Jules' house to go play. Jules' and her boys' toys put our toys to shame! It was good to go back and see the people we used to see on a daily basis. We love Tyler but still miss parts of Temple too! 

Colt's Residency Graduation

Since I'm caught up on pregnancy stuff... back to June 2017 for now. Colt's residency graduation was on June 15th. My parents kept Kinley for us, and I went down to Temple for it. At Scott & White, their graduation is not a formal graduation, at least in the Emergency department. It consists of dinner, drinks, awards and a big resident and faculty roast. I had planned on putting some of the videos of the roast on here. However, I watched them again and they are DEFINITELY inappropriate and a lot more inappropriate than I remember them being. One of the other outgoing residents, Nima, did the faculty roast and it was the best. He destroyed everyone.  Let's just say, Nima didn't hold back. Some of the stuff he said might've crossed the line a little. Hopefully everyone had tough skin. Colt probably got destroyed more in the faculty roast than he did in his own roas. Actually, I'm pretty sure Colt was brought up in EVERY single roast that was done! Colt's primary roast was about Colt and "Little Colt" aka Josh and how they ended up recruiting James into their group by the end of residency. During the night, they also made fun of Dr. Drigalla, one of the directors because of how in love with Colt he was at first. Many workout jokes were made about Colt, Josh and James. They also mentioned that they didn't know what staff was going to do with Colt leaving because they wouldn't have him there to tell them what to do all the time.  All of the roasts included pictures too. I might've given them several pictures, including the one of Colt in college when he was in Mr. Heartbreaker and was standing behind a guitar on stage and looked naked! The only problem with it is that everyone thought it was photoshopped. No, it was real! It was a fun night that ended up going until pretty late. 

Dr. Drigalla and Dr. Stone actually presented Colt and Josh's certificates to them at the same time. They said it was fitting. I'm pretty sure jokes were made by the crowd about Josh being Colt's mini me. It might've resulted in Josh flipping everyone off. When they were interviewing, there was actually questions on if they were couple matching or not.

After graduation, although we didn't stay long, we made an appearance at the after party. This is Tina, me and Jodi. While noone knew it yet but probably realized I wasn't drinking all night, I had found out just the day before that I was pregnant. Jodi was pregnant with twins. I don't know if Tina knew it yet, but she was pregnant as well. She's due just two days before me I think . 

I don't know how "fun" Colt would consider residency. While it was fun, it was a lot of work for him. I'm proud of him and all he's accomplished. It took 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school and then 3 years of residency to get to this point. We had a great 3 years in Temple! While we like Tyler, we both loved living in Temple the 3 years that we were there. 

There was a group picture of all the Scott & White residents taken that night. The only copy I've found online is so little that it's not clear. I know Colt has a copy somewhere so when I get it, I'll have to add it!

Moving Days

The moving company that Colt's new job provided came to pack and pick up all of our things on the morning of May 22nd. I'm glad it was a moving company that did everything and not us! They started packing and loading us on the 22nd, finished loading on the 23rd and delivered everything to the new house in Tyler on the 24th. Colt wasn't there our last morning so Kinley and I had to say goodbye to our house on our own. It was definitely a little bittersweet. It was a good house the three years that we were there.

When we left the house, Kinley and I went to Meg's for a late breakfast and had our last Meg's pancakes before we left town. We went to China Springs and stayed the night with Matt and Whitney on the 22nd. Colt met us there when he got off work. That night we went to Waco and ate at On the Border. I think Witten was a little jealous of Kinley eating food. 

We headed from there to Forney to stay with Colt's parents the night of the 23rd since all of our things weren't going to be in Tyler until the next day. While Kinley was napping on the 23rd and Colt's parents were there to watch her, Colt and I went furniture shopping. We did a lot of furniture shopping in May. We went to Weir's in Dallas and ended up deciding on our living room couch. We had to order exactly what we wanted so it ended up not getting delivered until after we'd already been in Tyler for a while. We ended up going with this couch but in a sectional. We also ordered a coffee table from there too.

This was Lucky in Forney. He was already wore out from the move. 

My parents came to Tyler on the 24th and were there when the movers unloaded. My mom helped unpack boxes and tried to help keep Kinley out of the movers way. 

This was Kinley with her Giggy and Pa on May 25th after we grabbed lunch at Clear Springs before they headed back home. She's a fan of having them closer now that we are in Tyler. 

And just because I'm sentimental...here's a couple of last pictures of our house in Temple. Colt had to spend some time there after our stuff was moved out to tidy up a few things before we sold it to the new owners in June. He also had to let painters in because the new owners had the whole house repainted white...white walls with white trim. I didn't ever get to see it, but Colt said it looked like the house was primed and ready to be painted. Maybe it looks better than he described.

When moving, the way to go is definitely having movers not only move you but pack up the boxes too!

Leaving CrossFit Sprag

My last day at CrossFit Sprag was May 18th. They announced that it was a partner workout again that day. When the workout was announced, one of the girls messaged me that if one of us died during the workout, they felt like I would have to stick around!  This is Jules and I after our actual last workout together! Jules is definitely a super mom and has two genius little boys. 

Megan brought donuts for everyone on our last morning at Sprag. While I did my final workout, Kinley had donuts to celebrate her last day at the gym! I think she got the better end of the deal! It was her first time to ever taste sprinkled donuts. 

It made it so much more fun to workout when working out with the same group of women everyday and then hanging out and playing with our babies afterwards!

My 32nd Birthday

On my birthday, Kinley and I started our day at the gym. My last day at CrossFit Sprag before our move was going to be the next day, May 18th. When they announced the May 17th workout as a partner workout, Jules and I assumed that we wouldn't have two partner workouts in a row and that it would be our last partner workout to do together before I moved. Her and I had started teaming up, and it was always assumed that we were going to be partners. After our workout, a few of the Sprag moms went to Chick-fil-a for lunch and a playdate. I miss all the Sprag moms that I worked out with in the mornings and their little ones!

I had a hair appointment later that day at 5. Colt kept Kinley while I was getting my hair done. When I got home from my appointment, surprisingly Matt and Whitney's car was there. Colt had cooked steak and all the sides by himself for dinner (while taking care of Kinley I'll add), and he had invited Matt, Whitney and Alicia over to surprise me for my birthday dinner! Whitney also brought Nothing Bundt Cakes for dessert. It was a nice little surprise. These girls are another reason that I miss Temple. They are two of the first people that I met when I moved there, and they became some of the best friends. We started out with no babies. As you can tell from this picture, all of our lives have definitely changed since we met! Since this picture was taken, Whitney and I are actually both working on Baby #2! 

First Trip to the Zoo

On November 11th, the TMEA group that I was in had their Friday playgroup at the Cameron Park Zoo in Waco. It was Kinley's first trip to the zoo. For us, the highlights of the trip were playing on the otter slide and the jaguars! I took our little red wagon with us for Kinley to ride around in, and it was perfect.

Breather

It's been 2 months since my last blog post. Before that, there was another month break... so it's been about 3 months since I've been on here. Life has just been busy. I literally have been working on taxes or bookkeeping during pretty much every nap time or at bedtime. If I wasn't, then I was either playing catch up on house stuff, cleaning, etc. I'm tired. I think I did about 16 tax returns the last two months, including two company returns. The rest were individuals along with some CA state filings. While that may not seem like a lot at all, it is a lot when I am doing it during nap times OR at least it felt like it! It may have felt like it because 4 of those were in the last week before the deadline. Getting those 4 done in a few days while Ms. Priss was sleeping wasn't easy. I told Colt that there was a reason I quit my job! Next year, I just have to learn to say no during that last week or two! 

Now that that is over, I am hoping to have a little more fun in my breaks and get caught up on stuff that I want to get caught up on... along with starting to purge our house a little and get rid of stuff before our move. We (or really Kinley and I) move in just a month to Tyler. Colt will be coming behind us a month later. We close on our house in Tyler on May 3rd. Since that's just a week away, Colt and I actually spent yesterday setting up all our utilities. It seems like it came fast! The movers are coming to start our actual move on May 22nd. That's when Kinley and I will become residents of Tyler. The closing for the house here isn't until June 12th.  Colt finishes his last shift here in Temple on June 24th. Talk about a lot of dates! Since the house will be empty after May 22nd, Colt (and Josh too) will be staying with James for a month. We are moving that week in May because Colt happens to have a week of vacation that month. With his schedule, moving in June wouldn't have really worked out. I'll come back here to close on the house on June 12th, which happens to be Kinley's 2nd birthday. She has her 2 year appointment that day as well. Yep, she is going to have to get shots on her birthday. Depending on what time we close on the house, I'm going to try to at least bring cupcakes and let her go to the gym or to the park and play with her friends that day. Colt is working both the weekend before and after her actual birthday. Since we'll be in different towns, there wasn't an ideal time to have her party.  We're going to have to have her party a couple weeks late once Colt is done with work for the month and in Tyler. Although her little friends her age from here won't be able to come to her party, it will be a shorter drive for our families. I'll also be coming back to Temple  again on July 17th for Colt's graduation.

I guess I thought things were going to slow down... but now that I type all that out, it doesn't seem like it's going to slow down any time soon!

Kinley turned 22 months back on April 12th. My next post, I'm going to do a little update on her and what all she's up to since it's been a while since I've done one. After that, I'm hoping to start being able to blog/scrapbook a little more than I have been. I'll be back all the way in November 2016 when I do that... just about 6 months behind!

Lately...

Well... I was doing good for a while on catching up on the blog. Now it's been about a month since I last posted. Of course... I have a ton of excuses. First, it's tax season. Although I'm not officially "working" anymore, I've been doing taxes pretty much every nap time. I told Colt the other day that this is why I quit working! I'm ready to have my ME time back. He responded that I didn't have to get everyones taxes done right away. However, I know what I have coming left to do. I would rather knock them out while I have them so I don't get bogged down closer to the deadline. 

Other than that, we've been busy 1. Buying a house in Tyler 2. Selling our land in China Springs and 3. Selling our house here in Temple. We've had a lot of property transactions going on lately! Luckily, it's all been smooth and couldn't have went better so far. 

We went to Tyler a few weekends ago to look at houses since Colt had a stretch of a few days off, and he wouldn't have another stretch for a while. My parents met us in Lindale and kept Kinley overnight for the first time so we could get more done. We spent two days, both Thursday and Friday, in Tyler looking. Dede and David went with us both days. We ended up buying a new house in a more established neighborhood. It's in Tyler city limits but in Whitehouse ISD. It's actually on Colt Lane! I'm sure Colt will get a lot of jokes for that one... Colt Smithson living on Colt Lane. He's already had a few people ask if that's why he bought the house! I should probably put "The Smithson Family" on our new address stamp instead of "Colt, Keri and Kinley." After months of looking at houses online, we decided to focus on the new construction market while we were in Tyler. It seemed like the best bang for our buck. Plus, since we weren't planning on moving until the end of May/first of June, we were afraid to wait until closer to time and not be able to find something we wanted. We found a couple of houses we liked the first day. One of the houses, we loved the builder but he was ready to close on the house we liked in the next week or so. He had a another lot but we wouldn't have had time to build one on it from scratch. Also, when we ultimately build our house, we want it on a little more land. The second house we probably would've bought if we hadn't have had to go back the second day. The builder and his wife of the second house ended up being a little snooty and were kinda jerks. It was a blessing in disguise because looking back, we didn't like the neighborhood near as much as the one that we bought in...plus I would've hated the dark wood floors! On Day 2, we called the realtor that had showed us around to make sure we weren't missing anything. After looking at those houses again that second morning (and Colt getting fired up a the builder and his wife), we opened our option back up. That's when we ended up finding our house on Colt Lane. We had saw it online but Colt hadn't liked it and didn't want to look at it initially because he thought the fire place looked funny. Once we went in, we loved it and it was pretty much done. Of course, there were a couple things I didn't like but I am the one that is responsible for finding the negative! I'm so bad that after we made the deal, Colt was ready to call and cancel after listening to me talk in bed that night! The kicker on this house was that it was done as well so we will own two houses for a little bit. We got the builder to push closing as late as possible so we will close around April 15th. We will just have to find someone to take care of the yard, etc. while we are still living in Temple. It's a pretty house though and now I can't quit looking at the pictures!

We sold our land in China Springs that we had originally planned on building on when Colt was set to work in Waco. We've only owned it a few months so the fact that we got out of it and broke even/made a tiny bit was a blessing. We had planned on selling it to friends, but they ended up backing out. The day that we found out, Colt listed it in the neighborhood Facebook group and immediately had about 15 people contact him wanting to buy it. He made a verbal deal with a lady that lived next door to the land. Of course... as soon as he did that, our friends decided they couldn't pass it up after all. We sold it to them and closed on it this past Friday. Our friends know that if they ever decide to sell, they definitely have buyers. The poor lady that we ended up not selling to was devastated and not too happy with Colt. 

On our house in Temple, I messaged the realtor that we used when we moved here a couple weeks ago asking about timing on putting it on the market so that we could catch the next group of residents moving in. He wanted to meet that Friday to discuss it. We met, and he said that he wouldn't list it officially until mid-March but that he would show residents the house if he was showing them around in the meantime. He showed a resident our house that following Tuesday, just 4 days after we met. They came back again to look at it that night. Then we got a call the next morning that they wanted to make an offer. They are from out of state so they actually sent the inspector out Wednesday night before they left town and before they made their official offer. They made their offer, we countered and they accepted. We are still in the 5 day grace period, but so far it looks like it's going to go through. Due to the market, we made a little bit of money on it too. It would sure be nice to not have to pay the realtor fee the 6%... but still coming out in the green after living here for three years, we're happy. Plus, to not have to show it but to one person is worth it's weight in gold. With Kinley and the dogs, being out of the house just when they looked at it those two times and for the inspection was enough! It will also be nice not having to keep it "show ready" all the time. I was already over it, and we hadn't even listed it! We bought this house before it was ever listed and now the new buyers did too so I guess it's a marketable house. The realtor certainly made a lot on it in the past 3 years and didn't even really have to do anything! Since the buyers are residents, they don't want to close until June 12th so that works well. It's actually Kinley's 2nd birthday and she has a doctor's appointment in town that day so I'll be here anyways. I will probably move to Tyler at the end of May while he finishes up because he can take a week off then. Then I guess he'll stay in our house here some of June and then find someone to stay with the rest of the month while he finishes up. Not ideal, but it definitely couldn't be worse and we're just glad we aren't having to put our stuff in storage or anything like that. 

Overall, all three of our little property transactions couldn't have went as smooth as it did. Now... although I'm a little sad about leaving Temple and will miss our routine, I'm looking forward to move into our new house in Tyler and make it ours!  I actually ordered Kinley some big girl bedding today for the new house... I may be jumping the gun a little! 

Here's to hoping it isn't another month before I blog again. I am still in November so just 4 months to catch up on!

Residency Pamphlet

Colt would probably kill me if he knew I was putting this on our blog! He made the cover of the Scott & White Emergency Medicine residency pamphlet though. 

Everyone in the program gave him a hard time about making the cover of the pamphlet. He did something (as usual) to one of the staff, and they created this and sent it to him! 

I would love to see him in work mode. He actually treated a baby that I know last night. The parents text me this morning that they were super appreciative of Colt and his kindness. They said it was a blessing having someone that cared. Although I know his caring meter depends on the patient and how they are acting sometimes... I know he is a good doctor. I just won't ever be able to see him in action! 

As you can see from my text to him below... in my mind, I see Grey's Anatomy or Chicago Med. Colt says it's nothing like that though. He actually doesn't like watching any medical shows because he thinks they are stupid and not realistic. He also will solve the cases or say how what they are doing is something that you would or wouldn't actually do in real life. He also says they don't have time to sit around and chat (or do other things like on Grey's Anatomy). Imagine that! Regardless, I'm proud of him. Only a few more months and he will be done with residency.

After Residency

Colt's residency here in Temple ends at the end of June 2017. In a few of my previous posts, I've mentioned us checking out both the Waco and Tyler areas for potential jobs after residency. I guess I might as well post a little job update on where we will be moving and all the decisions leading up to that. We had a lot of back and forth and weren't sure for a while. I think by the time the decision was made, Colt was just ready for it to be over. I guess it's a good thing for him to be wanted by multiple places though right?! 

Colt interviewed in April with ESP/Providence in Waco and was offered a job. He had two weeks to make a decision. It was an early job offer. However, his class is pretty competitive and several of them are wanting to stay in the Temple/Waco area. A lot of the class a couple years above Colt work at Providence and were really happy with their job at the time. 

We felt like we had two weeks to make a fast decision. Since we initially had thought we would be going back closer to both of our families, we decided to at least still entertain the idea before he signed with ESP. Colt didn't want to go back to Dallas at all and honestly, I didn't either. The last time I even drove through Rockwall, I text Colt and told him I was glad we didn't still live there. Josh is going to Trinity Mother Francis in Tyler. A couple of residents above Colt currently work there as well and really enjoy their jobs. Tyler would be about an hour from Colt's family and about 1.5 hours from my family. Colt was really turned off by the idea of Tyler initially because as of right now, the doctors are having to commute some shifts to Sulphur Springs. Colt just didn't want to have to commute at all when he could work somewhere where he didn't have to do that. Even though the shifts at the main hospital in Tyler are 9 hour shifts, the shifts in Sulphur Springs are 12 hours. When you add the commute time on to that, that makes a long day. Most of the guys try to schedule a double when they work in Sulphur Springs and stay the night there. Of course my parents chimed in that we could always stay with them! Colt is just very much about lifestyle and being home. Plus, he doesn't like to drive. However, just to have peace of mind about it, we made the trip that I mentioned in my previous post. 

In the meantime, two of Colt's bosses were also heavily recruiting him to stay in Temple as an attending. I honestly think Colt would be very happy teaching other residents and would probably love it. His initial thought was that he wanted to go somewhere else and work a year or two and get some different experience under his belt before possibly coming back to Temple to be an attending. We've been happy living here the past few years and love the Temple/Belton area. The negative is that it's 2 hours from Colt's family and 4 hours from mine. Our families don't get to see Kinley near enough. It would be nice to be a little closer as she's growing up and to be just be quick day trip to see my family. Also, the thing that created a little bit of drama with staying on as an attending is that 3 of the chief residents also wanted to stay as well. If they were to keep all 4 of them, they would technically be overstaffed. They were having to work on avenues to open up all 4 spots. 

We crunched a lot of numbers and did a lot of talking. We ended up deciding that we at least wanted to stay in this area to keep ties with Scott and White and dropped Tyler out of the equation. Colt actually got ESP to rewrite his contract and include a clause that he could come back and pick up shifts at Scott and White. In essence, he could have the best of both worlds. He could get the experience and potential to earn a little more, but he could also teach maybe a shift or two a month to see which setting was the best the fit for him. He ended up signing with ESP. Not long after signing, we actually ended up buying 5 acres of land in the Hills of Childress neighborhood in China Springs, right outside of Waco. The land is in the same neighborhood that some of our friends live in. The neighborhood is actually a wildlife preserve so pretty much every time we've been out there, we've seen turkeys or deer. We looked at a few different lots out there. There really wasn't anything for sale because it's high demand and everything was purchased so you kinda have to talk to people that own land that are willing to let some go. The 5 acres that we bought were not for sale at the time. We bought it from a lady that works for ESP that wanted to sale and purchase more acreage. Our plan was to start building on the land around January 2017 so that the house would be done around the time we would be moving. I learned a lot about construction loans and how the build process with the bank works! We worked on our house plans. Basically Colt ended up drawing it from scratch combining a few that we liked. We worked with an architect in Waco to finalize the plans and actually ended up buying them from him not too long ago. I LOVE our plans!

The pond wasn't actually ON our land. It backed up to our land. However, our plan was to hopefully end up buying the acreage behind us because the man who owned it was basically land locked with no access point. 

We thought it was a pretty good plan. Maybe we rushed into it a bit though because our plans to build a house on this land, changed. ESP started having a few billing issues and just some red flags that made us a little uncomfortable... so we put Tyler back on the table. Colt got back in touch with the recruiter at Trinity Mother Francis. She said they were definitely still  interested because he came so highly recommended. The first weekend of September, we went back to Tyler. This time it was a formal trip and the hospital put us up in a hotel for a few nights. The first night we had dinner with the two residents from Temple that currently work there. The next day, they had a realtor give us a tour of the neighborhoods and area. Then Colt had his interview, tour of the hospital and lunch with several of the other doctors on the last day. When I picked up Colt that day, I was fully expecting him to say that he had done his due diligence and we weren't going to Tyler. However, he came to the car really impressed. He felt really confident in the management and liked everything everyone had to say. He felt like it was a more solid program. Most of the doctors there go there and stay there. I had some hesitations about the schools in Tyler since most of the people we talked to have kids that attend private schools. However, after talking to a few more people and doing a little more research, there are definitely other options in both Tyler ISD and surrounding areas. Ultimately, we decided that if we have the opportunity to be close to family, we might as well try it. I have a feeling if we stayed in Temple, we would honestly probably stay here forever and never move closer to family... and if you know my family (especially my dad) ... he's not moving anywhere! 

 Since we did go ahead and buy our houseplans, we do still plan on building our house ONE DAY. It just won't be near as soon as planned. That's a little bit of a bummer because we were excited about it.  If all goes well in Tyler, we hope to eventually find land there and end up building. In the meantime, we will try to rent if we can find something or may end up buying with plans on moving again in a year or two. We thought about holding on to our land in China Springs in case we end up moving back soon, but we have a few people interested and will probably just go ahead and sale it and get it off our plate. 

 Both of our families are pretty excited about us being closer. Although, I will miss Temple, I'm excited too. Plus, the threesome including Josh and James, are all staying together and all going to Tyler. Colt, Josh and James see each other everyday so they get to stay together. James was actually going to ESP with us in Waco. After the changes and Colt being so impressed with Tyler, he scheduled a trip to Tyler and ended up changing as well. I think and hope it'll be a good move! I know it's a done deal this time and I don't see us changing our mind yet again! Colt has been told that he has a job here if he ever changes his mind or is ready for a change so that's definitely good to know! 

June

Besides having a baby, another big thing that happened in June is that Colt finished up his intern year at the end of June. That means, he finished up having to work 12 hour shifts in the emergency department! Now that he's a second year, the months that he's in the department, he typically works 9 hour shifts. Then he spends a little more time at home wrapping up charts.

I cut out the name, but at the end of June, Colt got this in his mailbox from a patient that he saw. I thought it was nice since I hear a lot about angry patients that get mad at him for not giving them what they want!

A couple more of Colt's accomplishments

Not too long after Colt presented in Austin, we found out that he had won an award and was nominated AND chosen to be inducted into the 2015 John L. Montgomery, MD Resident and Fellow Chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society. The department head told him it was a pretty big accomplishment. From what I understand it's not just an award for first year residents, it's for all residents in all departments I believe. He had one particular case where he really fought for his patient and he's pretty sure that is what led to his nomination. Regardless, I'm super proud of him.

Then just a week or so later, he also found out that the paper he had submitted on another case was published in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine. His article is called Bilateral Lower Extremity Swelling: Black Pearl. We are supposed to get a copy but evidently you can buy it too!

This also means that he's already done with his research requirement!

First Day of Residency

I've had a lot of alone time lately which is why I am finally catching up on our blog. Colt is in his ETS rotation this month and lately he's been pulling about 15-16 hour shifts. Here lately he leaves about 4:30 or 5 and he gets home around 8 or 9. He hasn't had a day off in what feels like forever so when he does get home, he's pretty much a zombie. The other night he fell asleep with his dinner in his lap about 10 minutes after he walked in the door! Next month he's back in the emergency department so hopefully it'll be a little better for him. 

His first day of residency was on July 1st and he had a 7pm-7am shift. I was disappointed because I forgot to take a picture of him before his first day… so to make me happy, he snapped a pic and sent it to me. 

I did get a pic of him the next morning when he got home and yes, I know, I'm cheesy!
